Elydian Dawn series
Elydian Dawn: The legend begins
‘The Elydian story. Is there any proof it actually happened like that?’ Dominic asked.
Flora hesitated. ‘Do you insist on proof, or will you allow speculation?’
‘Do you believe it, Flora?’
‘I believe in the essence of the tale. The similarities between the Elydian story and those other parallel myths weaken it to some degree, but I believe there was such a forced landing and such a catastrophe on or around the date that has been mentioned. However, I doubt the colony survived more than a baker of Terran years. I do not believe in the wilder tales.’
‘Tell me these wilder tales.’
‘Tales of glowing folk or jewelled sand or water that kills with a touch. These are children’s tales, told by the crazed few who took the millichance of life.’
‘How can I get a permit to visit Elydia?’ asked Dominic.
Flora recoiled. 'You can't.'
So, what really happened, way back then?
'It began in the year 2274, when the colony ship Elysian Dawn-'
'No! No, it really began eighteen years before, or possibly thirty.'
'It might be a legend now, a full three centuries later, but back then, the people were real. They dreamed of sending a colony ship to the stars. The dream went on, and on and finally the journey began.'
'But what happened to these brave pioneers?'
'That's the point. They were pioneers, but they were people. For example...
Marianne Arcadia. She was seventeen. She expected to marry Jeremiah and raise a family.
Edsen Balm was fifteen. He was an awkward and nerdy only child who just wanted to be close to Marianne.
Jameel Singh was a bright and ambitious young man who lived on Shiva. He intended to travel home to Terra to meet his fiancee’s parents.
Hanaka Moon was forty. She meant to oversee the next generation of shipborn, and pass the mantle of healer to her daughter.
Citizen Meera Singh, Jameel's sister, wanted to prove herself as the brightest new diamond in Mother Shiva’s crown.
Fifty-something Cornelia Conti just hoped to get her embroidery done and to find shampoo that didn’t contain Stay-color.
Harry Fejoa had his own agenda, to spend more time in a stas-tank than any man alive.
So you see? They were people, with lives, ambitions and plans. All their plans crash-landed with the starship Elysian Dawn.
After that, came The Silvering, and then there had to be New Dreams...
